Why We Went the Indie Route
The problem with self-published books is that there is such a wide range in terms of quality. And it makes sense: creating art in the vacuum of one’s spare bedroom is a recipe for bad. How many times have you taken a charitable gamble on a self-published book with sub-par cover art only to regret the loss of your $3.99 before the end of the first chapter? This isn’t always the case, but it happens more than we would like.
With this sobering reality in mind, we set out to help crack the code on indie-publishing and deliver fiction every bit as good as what comes out of a major publishing house. So how are we going about it?
1. For starters, we became a “we.” In other words, we made the conscious choice to become a team of storytellers, packing all of our unique strengths into the voice and pseudonym of a singular author.
N.J. TANGER – THE TEAM
Nathan Beauchamp is a gifted science-fiction writer and successful businessman with a background in finance. He has multiple short stories in publication and is the brains behind the nuts-and-bolts business strategy of the Universe Eventual book series.
Joshua Russell is a screenwriter and filmmaker by trade. One of the highest ranked instructors at DePaul University where he teaches story craft, Josh is a story structure enthusiast and provides the comic relief, which is ever-so-necessary for a team of ambitious artists.
Rachael Tanger is a world-traveler, entrepreneur, and fiction junkie. She has a rich background in online advertising and marketing, as well as web and graphic design. She has a profound dedication to the crossroads of art and technology.
2. Secondly, we dedicated ourselves to excellence in art and craft. Not only did we commit to writing good stories, we also subjected them to meaningful criticism and refinement. We hired a professional editor with twenty years of experience in the industry. We took our lumps, wrote and rewrote our book until we hated it, loved it, hated it, and then fell in love with it again. A one-year project became a five-year project as we refused to release work that was less than excellent.
We show the same commitment to quality in our visual art and supporting materials. We invest in high-end artists and designers to help us realize a visual style that compares with the best books out there. We want the external package to be as sexy as the content.
3. Last, we made the decision not just to write a book, but to design a universe. In the world of professional arts, accumulating an audience is everything and we decided to pursue this maxim with as much strategy and gusto as we could gather. This required a massive upfront investment of time and energy that we had not initially accounted for—building a universe is not a joke! Regardless, we decided to play for keeps and do the hard work of designing a creative template we could build upon, in theory, exponentially.
So why should you buy our self-published book? Because it’s an excellent book in every way, and because each chapter you read will be another chapter wherein we prove to you that your $3.99 was well spent.
